Raccoon Damage Repair: Restoring and Reinforcing Wooden Siding
At ProHands Handyman, we were recently called out to inspect a home where a raccoon had chewed multiple holes through the wooden siding, giving it direct access to the inside of the structure. This posed not only a risk to the house but also to the safety and comfort of the homeowners.

Our job was to assess the full extent of the damage, reinforce the vulnerable areas, and restore the siding to a like-new condition.
Initial Assessment
Upon arrival, we found several damaged sections where the raccoon had torn through the siding near the roofline and the lower edge of the wall. In some areas, the sheathing behind the siding was exposed or completely destroyed, and insulation had been pulled out or damaged. Moisture had also affected certain parts of the wood, leading to partial rot.
Step-by-Step Repair Process
Careful Removal of Loose and Rotted Materials
We removed all loose, chewed, or rotted siding panels and cleaned out the surrounding area, down to the sheathing and framing.Reinforcement and Pest Prevention
We reinforced the structure behind the siding using pressure-treated support strips and added galvanized metal mesh to deter future animal entry. This mesh was stapled securely inside the framing.Cutting and Installing New Panels
We matched the existing siding pattern with new T1-11 plywood sheets, carefully measured and cut to fit the repaired sections. Panels were installed with waterproof adhesive and secured with exterior-grade screws.Sealing All Gaps and Joints
After installation, we sealed all panel seams, nail holes, and gaps with high-quality exterior caulk to protect the new wood from moisture.Priming and Painting
The new siding was primed and painted to match the original color and texture, blending the repairs seamlessly into the surrounding walls.
Final Result
After our work was complete, there was no trace of the raccoon's damage. The siding looked brand new, and the wall was now reinforced, sealed, and protected against both the weather and future pest invasions. This repair not only restored the aesthetics of the home but also significantly improved its durability and safety.
