New Redwood Fence Installation Using Reclaimed Panels

We recently completed a 250-foot wood fence installation for a homeowner who wanted a durable, natural-looking fence without overspending on materials. Our solution: reuse old panels where possible and build a brand-new frame to ensure strength and longevity.

Step-by-Step Breakdown of the Project:

🔍 Careful Demolition and Selection
We began by carefully dismantling the existing fence. Many of the old redwood panels were weathered but still structurally sound. Instead of discarding everything, we thoroughly inspected each panel and hand-selected the ones that retained good shape, strength, and appearance.

🔨 Cleaning and Preparing the Reclaimed Boards
After selecting the usable panels, we removed all the nails, screws, and debris. This not only prepared them for reuse but also saved time by avoiding unnecessary cleaning of panels that wouldn’t be reused. Reclaimed boards often require extra care, but the natural patina they bring can give the finished fence a unique and appealing look.

📦 Supplementing with New Redwood Panels
Although we managed to salvage a good number of old boards, they weren't enough to cover the entire 250-foot span. We sourced high-quality new redwood panels to match the reclaimed ones in both size and appearance. By blending old and new, we maintained visual consistency across the fence.

🪣 Replacing the Entire Structural Frame
To ensure the fence would last for years to come, we completely replaced the underlying structure — including all posts, rails, and bracing. For this, we used pressure-treated lumber, which is known for its resistance to moisture, pests, and decay. The result is a rock-solid foundation for both the reclaimed and new panels.

🌟 A Unique, Budget-Friendly Result
By integrating reclaimed materials with new ones and building on a pressure-treated frame, we delivered a final product that was both cost-effective and attractive. Once the homeowner stains the fence, the reclaimed and new boards will blend even more seamlessly, giving the appearance of a brand-new installation with added character.

Why This Approach Works:

  • Cost Savings: Reusing existing boards cut down significantly on material expenses.

  • ♻️ Eco-Friendly: Keeping usable wood out of the landfill reduces environmental impact.

  • 🌲 Strong Structure: New pressure-treated framing ensures the fence is built to last.

  • 🌟 Great Appearance: With staining, the combination of new and aged wood creates a beautiful, cohesive look.

Smart, sustainable, and built to last — that’s how we do it.
