In this article, we’ll walk you through the benefits, process, and design impact of this trending home improvement project.
What Is an Accent Wall?
An accent wall is a single wall in a room that stands out visually from the others. This can be achieved through color, texture, or the addition of architectural features like wood slats or panels. Accent walls are used to:
Add depth and visual interest
Define a specific zone in an open space
Highlight furniture or lighting fixtures
Bring modern or rustic texture to a room
In our project, we used vertical wooden slats installed over a bold, dark-painted wall to create a clean, contemporary look in the dining area.
Materials Used
For this particular installation, we used:
Pre-sanded pine slats
Dark matte wall paint (charcoal gray)
High-quality construction adhesive
Level and laser guide
Brad nailer for extra reinforcement
All materials were selected to ensure durability, clean lines, and easy future maintenance.
Our Process Step by Step
🧱 1. Wall Preparation
We started by cleaning and prepping the wall surface to ensure paint and adhesive would bond effectively.
🎨 2. Painting the Base Wall
A dark charcoal gray paint was applied to the wall to provide contrast with the light wood slats. This color combination brings out a strong modern feel while still being warm and inviting.
🪨 3. Slat Layout & Design Planning
Before installing any slats, we laid them out on the floor and measured spacing, angles, and height. In this design, we used a clean vertical pattern with an intersecting diagonal segment that added geometric interest.
🔨 4. Installing the Wood Slats
Each slat was adhered with construction adhesive and secured with a brad nailer. Precision was key — we used a level and laser to ensure straight alignment.
🔧 5. Finishing Touches
We filled any small nail holes, gave the slats a final sanding where needed, and applied a clear matte sealant to protect the wood while keeping its natural look.
