Laundry Room Closet: A Functional Storage Solution

One of the best solutions is installing a custom-built closet. In this recent Los Angeles project, we transformed an empty laundry room corner into a practical and spacious storage unit.

Step 1. Preparing Materials and Cutting Panels

For this project, we used laminated furniture panels, cut with a circular saw and a guide rail.

This method allows for perfectly straight cuts without chips, which is especially important when working with white laminated surfaces.

In the photos, you can see the cutting process using a metal guide for precise straight cuts.

Step 2. Layout and Setup

The next step was marking out the space with a laser level.

Here we encountered the first challenge: the laundry room walls and floor were far from even. Uneven surfaces and irregular corners meant that every detail had to be carefully adjusted to fit.

Unlike store-bought cabinets with fixed dimensions, custom-built solutions allow us to create furniture that fits the exact geometry of the space.

Step 3. Assembling and Installing the Frame

Once the side panels were ready, we installed the dividers and secured the structure to the walls and floor.

Again, the uneven floor presented a challenge: we had to adjust the height and carefully level the frame so that the finished closet would look perfectly straight.

Inside the closet, we created adjustable shelves. Holes for shelf pins were drilled in advance, giving flexibility to rearrange the shelves for different needs — from storing cleaning supplies to larger boxes.

Step 4. Installing Doors and Finishing Touches

The project included two sections:

• A closed section with a door, ideal for storing items you don’t want visible.

• Open shelving, convenient for items you need to access frequently.

The doors and panels also had to be trimmed and adjusted on-site to fit the actual dimensions of the niche. This is where custom furniture clearly shows its advantage over pre-made store cabinets.

Step 5. The Final Result

The finished built-in closet fits seamlessly into the laundry room and provides:

• a closed storage area for chemicals and supplies,

• open shelving for easy access to everyday items,

• a clean, modern appearance that blends with the home’s interior.
