Laminate Flooring Installation in Los Angeles: Why Fixing a Squeaky Subfloor Is Critical Before Installing New Flooring

Installing laminate flooring may look like a quick and simple upgrade, but in reality, the quality of the finished floor depends heavily on the condition of the subfloor underneath. In one of our recent projects in Los Angeles, the ProHands Handyman team installed new laminate flooring throughout several areas of a home, including a long hallway and adjacent rooms.

Before the installation could begin, however, we encountered a problem that is extremely common in older homes: a squeaky and unstable subfloor.

Properly fixing these issues before installing laminate flooring is essential to ensure durability, stability, and long-term comfort.

The Hidden Problem: Squeaky Subfloors

When we first inspected the floor, it became clear that the existing subfloor had movement in several areas. Walking across the surface produced noticeable squeaks and slight flexing in certain spots.

This problem usually occurs when:

The plywood subfloor becomes loose over time

Fasteners lose their grip in the joists

The structure of the floor shifts slightly due to age and movement of the building

If laminate flooring is installed directly over a squeaky subfloor, the problem will not disappear. In fact, the noise often becomes even more noticeable once the floating floor is installed.

For this reason, our team always addresses subfloor issues before installing any laminate flooring.

Stabilizing the Subfloor

Before starting the laminate installation, we carefully inspected the entire floor surface and identified the areas where movement was present.

To eliminate the squeaks, we:

Located the floor joists beneath the plywood

Added additional structural screws to secure the subfloor

Reinforced areas where the plywood had slight movement

Rechecked the floor to ensure it was completely stable

This step is critical because laminate flooring requires a solid and stable base to perform properly.

Once the subfloor was secured, the squeaking completely disappeared.

Preparing the Floor for Laminate Installation

After stabilizing the structure of the floor, we inspected the surface to ensure it was suitable for laminate installation.

Laminate flooring is installed as a floating floor, which means the planks connect to each other but are not glued or nailed directly to the subfloor. Because of this system, the base surface must be:

Stable

Relatively level

Free of movement and noise

Any imperfections in the base can lead to long-term problems such as:

Clicking sounds

Separation between planks

Premature wear of locking joints

By properly preparing the subfloor, we ensure the new flooring will last for many years.

Installing Laminate Flooring in a Long Hallway

One of the unique aspects of this project was the long and narrow hallway where the laminate flooring was installed.

Hallways require careful planning because even a small alignment mistake at the beginning can become very noticeable along the entire length of the space.

Our team carefully established the layout and maintained consistent alignment during installation to ensure the flooring remained perfectly straight throughout the corridor.

Maintaining Proper Expansion Gaps

Another important step during laminate flooring installation is leaving expansion gaps along the walls.

Laminate flooring naturally expands and contracts due to changes in temperature and humidity. If the flooring is installed too tightly against the walls, the boards may:

Buckle

Warp

Push against each other

To prevent this, we use spacers during installation to maintain consistent expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room. These gaps are later covered by baseboards or trim, leaving a clean finished appearance.

The Final Result

After completing the preparation and installation, the home received a brand-new laminate floor with a modern wood appearance that flows seamlessly through the hallway and adjacent spaces.

Because the squeaky subfloor was properly repaired before installation, the finished flooring is:

Quiet

Stable

Durable

Visually consistent throughout the home

This project demonstrates that professional flooring installation involves much more than simply laying planks — it requires proper inspection, preparation, and attention to structural details.
