Recently, the ProHands Handyman team completed a full renovation of a boiler room that had suffered extensive damage over the years. After opening up the walls and ceiling, we discovered multiple issues, including:
a weakened and rotted wooden frame,
active mold growth,
damaged electrical wiring,
signs of long-term water intrusion.
1. Inspection and Structural Reinforcement
Our first step was partial demolition of the damaged drywall and plaster. Once exposed, we found that many structural framing elements had lost their integrity due to long-term moisture exposure. We reinforced the entire frame by replacing rotted studs, adding support where necessary, and ensuring the structure was safe and stable for future use.
2. Mold Remediation
All wall cavities and ceiling spaces were treated with professional-grade mold control products. We used safe, effective antimicrobial solutions to eliminate mold and prevent future growth — ensuring the space would be healthy and safe for occupancy.
3. Electrical Repair and Insulation
Damaged sections of old conduit wiring were repaired and restored. We also installed Johns Manville insulation throughout the ceiling to improve thermal performance and energy efficiency.
4. Drywall Installation and Surface Leveling
We installed new drywall (Sheetrock) on the walls and ceiling, using moisture-resistant greenboard where appropriate. All joints, screws, and seams were taped, mudded, and sanded to achieve a smooth, flawless finish — ready for painting.
5. Painting and Final Finishing
To complete the transformation, we primed and painted the walls and ceiling in clean, bright tones. All visible plumbing lines were cleaned and painted to match the new wall surface. We also replaced the old ceiling light fixture and added a ventilation grille to improve airflow in the room.
Final Result:
What was once a moldy, unsafe utility room became a fully renovated, clean, and structurally sound boiler room — safe for daily use and ready for long-term operation.
